This article provides instructions on how to link BYO Azure clouds to Cloud Connector. If you're looking to link an Azure from Telstra to Cloud Connector, we have another page for that. |
You'll need to be logged in as an Admin or Manager at workspace layer or higher.

On the 'Cloud services' page (home page), click on the name of a Cloud Connector you've already added and linked to your Telstra Next IP® network.
This takes you to the details page for that Cloud Connector.
This is where you can:
Establishing a link between a Cloud Connector and a Microsoft Azure cloud
Prerequisites
- A Telstra Next IP network service in place with an allocated and known Full National Number (FNN).
- An Azure ExpressRoute service associated with the cloud you're linking
- IP addresses must not overlap with these ranges: 0.0.0.0/8, 127.0.0.0/8, 169.254.0.0/16, 224.0.0.0/4, 240.0.0.0/4, 255.255.255.255/32
- Select /28 IP subnet block for interconnect subnet.
Steps to link Cloud Connector to a Microsoft Azure cloud
The steps described below refer to the details page for a Cloud Connector already linked to your Next IP network (the image shows a details page that's connected to Next IP but not a cloud). You can link more than one cloud to a cloud connector.
1. Select Link a cloud.
2. Answer the questions to select the cloud you want to link to the Cloud Connector.
2.1. You'll be asked if the cloud you want to link is already on Cloud Sight. Click on No.
2. 2. Select Azure as the type of cloud you want to link.
3. Link and configure your cloud.
- Link your ExpressRoute.
- If you're linking a BYO Azure cloud you've added to Cloud Sight you can select, select your ExpressRoute from the drop-down list
- If your cloud hasn't been added to Cloud Sight, you'll need to provide the ExpressRoute Service Key – this is the identifier assigned to your ExpressRoute circuit.
- Click on the Verify button. You can't continue until your Service Key is verified.
- You'll see the bandwidth allocation to the link. This will be equal to your ExpressRoute bandwidth. In addition to changing the bandwidth on your link, you'll need to modify your ExpressRoute circuit via the Azure portal. See Microsoft documentation on modifying your ExpressRoute circuit. Please note:
- Your link bandwidth can be lower than your ExpressRoute bandwidth, but a higher link bandwidth will be throttled to that of your ExpressRoute.
- If you don't have enough bandwidth on your Cloud Connector to the bandwidth you've chosen, you'll be given the option of upgrading your Cloud Connector bandwidth.
Note that you can upgrade your Cloud Connector bandwidth allocation at any time but cannot downgrade below your initial selection until the end of the contract term. |
- Choose your peering type. You can choose:
- Private peering
- Choose whether you want default route suppression – this is an option where the default route (0.0.0.0/0) is filtered and dropped at the Cloud Connector before being advertised into Azure. If you have 0.0.0.0/0 in your Next IP network and you want to use Azure as your public internet gateway, choose this option.
- Enter interconnect subnet – You must provide a /28 IP subnet block for the network interconnect
- Private peering
- Click on Next.
4. Complete the post-connection configuration.
For BYO Azure clouds, automatic post-connection configuration isn't available on Cloud Sight. You'll need to connect your VNets on the Azure portal after you submit these forms. See the Microsoft Azure documentation on how to Connect a VNet to an ExpressRoute using the portal.
Remember, the link to your cloud isn't activated until you've completed connecting your VNets, even if you've submitted this form.
5. Review your configuration and (if necessary) purchase.
- You'll only be charged for any upgrades to your Cloud Connector bandwidth - if you have upgraded, please accept the Terms and Conditions.
You'll see a summary of the details you've selected.
Select the Link button to submit the form. Note that you can save the details you've entered at any time, and return to complete the form later.
Edit the link between your Cloud Connector and Azure Cloud
The steps described below refer to the details page for a Cloud Connector already linked to your Next IP network and a cloud.
1. Select View from the drop down menu on the cloud tile (three dots on a tile on the right of your Cloud Connector).
2. Inline editing is available on the View page. Please note editing can only happen one field at a time.
2.1 Click on the edit (pencil icon) icon next to the field you want to edit.
The following fields can be edited via the View page:
- Link name
- Default route suppression – enable or disable
- Bandwidth allocated to the connection – choose from:
- 50Mbps
- 100Mbps
- 200Mbps
- 500Mbps
- 1Gbps
- 2Gbps
- 5Gbps
You'll see a notification if your bandwidth allocation isn't equal to your ExpressRoute bandwidth. If you choose to upgrade your link to a bandwidth greater than your ExpressRoute, you'll need to modify your ExpressRoute circuit via the Azure portal. See Microsoft documentation on modifying your ExpressRoute circuit. Please note:
-
- If you don't have enough bandwidth on your Cloud Connector to the bandwidth you've chosen, you'll be given the option of upgrading your Cloud Connector bandwidth.
Note that you can upgrade your Cloud Connector bandwidth allocation at any time but cannot downgrade below your initial selection until the end of the contract term. |
3. After you've completed editing, click on the tick to submit your changes. To cancel the changes click on the cross.
If you've updated your Cloud Connector bandwidth you'll need to accept our terms and conditions.
Delete the link between your Cloud Connector and Azure Cloud
The steps described below refer to the details page for a Cloud Connector already linked to your Next IP network and a cloud.
1. Select Delete from the drop down menu on the cloud (three dots on a tile on the right of your Cloud Connector) you want to delete.
2. Type the word 'Delete' in the text box.
3. Select Yes, delete.
